Thank you to all those who braved the blustery weather to attend the Annual General Meeting on Wed. Nov. 17th at the Legends Centre. Coffee, tea and Timbits were available for those who joined us.

The minutes from last year’s meeting were accepted (Minutes link). ODAWG’s 2010 accomplishments at the park were illustrated in a power point presentation and the Treasurer’s Report was received.

A Think and Share Activity provided us with some ideas and concerns to be addressed. We will soon be putting together an on-line survey to gather input from our members on these and other matters.

We are still looking for volunteers to be Ambassadors and for the Memorial Project Committee. If you are interested, please contact Clare (clare.mike.ford@sympatico.ca) or Debi (debi.foster@sympatico.ca) for further information. There will be a Memorial Committee Meeting on November 30 at 7:00 pm at 1303 Northgate (Clare’s home).

The 2010 Volunteers of Distinction were announced and presented with Certificates and a gift certificate from Global Pets as an appreciation of our thanks. The winners of this year’s “Bow Wow Awards” are Jennifer Harsell for her work on the ODAWG Days 2011 Calendar and Cory Panas of Oshawa Vacuum Ltd. for their generous sponsorship this year. (Cory was unable to attend the meeting and will receive his award at a later date.)

The meeting was adjourned following a question and answer session.

And here are the minutes to our September Executive Meeting.

ODAWG Executive Meeting 2010-09-15

Present: Jen Harsell, Marty and Carolyn Pageot, Debi Foster, Yvonne Kuhn, Clare Ford, Diane Meitner

Treasurers Report:

Cheques have arrived and will continue without the double signature lines.

We are averaging about 1 new member a month but will wait for the increase that will occur after our October Membership drive. $4 170.12 in the bank.

Special Projects:

Yvonne indicated we have spent approximately $1800.00 on Practica bags by the end of August. We are going thru a lot of bags which is a good thing. Inquiries will be made to see if we could get a discount by buying larger amounts at a time. Marty has made 12 benches and will do 3 more for the park. Several people noted that the benches have been well appreciated and used. Thank you Marty!

Clare will e-mail Memorial Committee for a progress report.

City Update:

$40 000.00 was spent on fence movement, stairs, and the future new sign for the Grandview entrance. The sign will be 2.5 metres high, 5 metres long done in brick.

Deb will email Bill Slute about spreading and moving wood chips. Trails also need trimming. Concern was expressed about the entrance to the off leash park not being well defined.

Ambassadors:

Diane will wait until we have adequate participation to book Corbett Park for the Canine Good Neighbour program. New tack board will be added to the existing sign at the front of the park to guide visitors. A framed map will be placed on the back of the sign. New membership drive will be held Saturday October 2nd 8:00-4:30 pm.

Calendar:

A&E Graphics will print the calendars as their price was the best. They will be given advertisement space in the calendar. We have 75 prepaid calendars at this point. Multiples in the future will be sold $10.00 for one, $15.00 for two and $20.00 for three. Multiple sales will be reimbursed accordingly at the Membership Drive Oct. 2nd. Calendar sample shown at the meeting was very well received. Thanks Jen for your many hours of work. It looks amazing!

Entries into the ODAWG Days Calendar Contest are no longer being accepted. All entries have been judged, and the photo submissions were amazing, and choosing the winners was a difficult job. Every photo entered will be in the calendar. The winners will be revealed on October 2 when the calendar goes on sale, and they will be $10 each. Thanks to Jen Harsell and all of her hard work.

Also on October 2nd, we will be holding the CKC Canine Good Neighbour Evaluation at 9:00 AM. An Announcement from the ODAWG Executives

If you weren’t out at the park today or I imagine yesterday afternoon, you may not realize that the south bridge is now officially dismantled. The only thing remaining at 8:00 am this morning were the cement support pillars!
There was also a fencing crew out and it appears that they will be blocking off any access to the old trail area at the north side of the big field. I am not quite sure why they felt that it required fencing, but that is how it is.

2nd Announcement: Notice in regards to Boundary Changes and other Park changes: the week of June 28th

For the past 2 years the Exec along with the City Staff has been working to get the boundaries adjusted so that we can have a more natural flow to the off leash area. With everything there is some give and take. The end result is that we will have the Main pathway that leads from the parking to the Center bridge and the Center bridge as an off leash area. To get this we had to give up the South bridge. The South bridge will be decommissioned at the same time as the boundary gets changed. The reason for the decommissioning is the erosion in that area has made the bridge unsafe and it is only getting worse. It has also been decided to fence the sloped access to the creek east of the orchard area to protect the natural state of the area. The area has been so heavily used that we hope with the fencing that we will be able to give the area a rest so that it can rejuvenate.

Please be advised that this work is scheduled for the week of June 28th, 2010.

I think everyone can agree that these are great changes, espeacially when it comes to the muddy season.

Thank you. Clare Ford

Concerns Regarding Dogs and Discarded Cigarette Butts

A fellow dog walker at the park has alerted us to the toxic affects of ingested cigarette butts on dogs. Sadly, her dog died due from eating cigarette butts, so it is a serious concern. It appears from the literature that dogs are strangely attracted to eating the discarded butts.

Dr. Dawn Rueben of petplace.com has written “The toxic level of nicotine in dogs is 5 milligrams of nicotine per pound of body weight. The butt of a cigarette can contain from 4 to 8 milligrams depending on the length of the butt and the content of the original cigarette. Cigarette butts have a deceptively large amount of tobacco relative to the size of the butt as smoking concentrates some of the nicotine in the butt.”

We ask kindly, in consideration of the health all the dogs at the park that our walkers who smoke please keep their butts and dispose of the cold butt in the garbage pails provided or even take them home. Thank you SO much!

ODAWG Executive

New Projects - Summer 2010

Memorial Project: ODAWG will be establishing a program where canine companions who are no longer with us can be remembered. Possibilities include planting of a tree or shrub, a plaque of recognition or some other unique ideas. If you are interested in being part of this project please contact Clare at membership@harmonydogpark.ca.

Benches Project: There have been requests for additional places to sit throughout the park, so ODAWG is in the process of designing seats and benches that will fit in with the natural nature of the park and use wood that would otherwise go to waste. We are looking for creative people, people who are good with tools, and some brawn to help put the seats and benches together. If you are interested in helping with this project please contact Clare at membership@harmonydogpark.ca.

Calendar: One of our members has volunteered to help put together a calendar for 2012 as a fundraising project. We are looking for a contact in the printing industry so that we can get some quotes for printing costs. If you have a contact or are interested in helping with this project please contact Clare at membership@harmonydogpark.ca.

03.04.10

ODAWG presents the inspiring story of Faith, a 2-legged dog who walks upright on her back legs and shows the world you don't have to be complete to be complete.

02.07.10

The City of Oshawa will be depositing more wood chips in the Orchard area on either Tuesday February 9th or Wednesday February 10. We ask that everybody please join us by bringing a rake to help spread the chips out evenly, as well as continue our efforts to cover the path from the Orchard to the Entrance of the park. Thank you very much, the ODAWG Executives.

12.08.09

URGENT

We would like to get in contact with the owner of “Thunder” a black German Shepherd to confirm that Thunder has been inoculated against rabies. A gentleman who was bitten will require a painful series of rabies needles if he does not receive this information. Please contact Clare Ford at clare.mike.ford@sympatico.ca immediately if you can help us with this request.

PLEASE BE AWARE

A dog owner at the park has informed us that there is a virus called Canine Papilloma Virus (dog warts) going around the dog park. Her dog has just been infected and has caught it from another dog at the dog park. It is hard to know which dogs have it as it develops usually in the mouth but can spread to other places. The vet advised her that there is no way to treat it and that it could take any where from 1-6months to heal and fall off on their own. Unless the dog bites them and they start to bleed then they can be removed. If dogs have it they are to stay away from other dogs until healed as it is contagious. If you have any further questions regarding this virus please contact your veterinarian.

12.07.09

ODAWG is pleased to announce that Oshawa Vacuum is supporting a cleaner park by providing funding for the dog poop bags. We are very grateful for the support of Mr. Cory Panus and his company.

And now, for your viewing pleasure, we present a National Geographic Story about an Orangutan and a Hound.

11.28.09

The City of Oshawa has dumped and spread some wood chips in the “orchard bowl” area to help alleviate the mud problem that exists there. The chips have been roughly distributed, but require further raking. ODAWG would greatly appreciate your assistance with this project. At the present time we don’t have an official work party planned, so please feel free to bring a rake (garden variety ‘broad low’ will be more effective than ‘fan’ leaf style) and spend even a few minutes distributing the chips to remove the ruts that are presently there. Be prepared to answer questions about what you are doing and why, it will be a wonderful ice-breaker for meeting other dog walkers.

There are plans to spread chips along some of the pathways in the future (we don’t have any timelines yet), at which time we will organize some work parties.

Thank you so much for your help!

ODAWG Executive

And now, for your viewing pleasure, we present Carolyn Scott & Rookie dancing to the music of Grease

Durham Human Society

I am sure that most of you have heard by now that our local Humane Society was destroyed by fire December 17th, 2008.  Our sincerest condolences go out to the dedicated staff and volunteers on the devastating loss of around 200 animals that they loved and cared for on a daily basis.  We have supported The Humane Society of Durham Region for many years and are compelled to help them even more after this tragedy.  Until January 31st, 2009  www.funnyfarmboutique.ca will be donating $7.50 for every collar AND each leash that is purchased during this time, be sure to put "Durham Humane" in the comments box on checkout.  If you do not know of a dog that needs a funky new collar or leash right now, then we urge you to please go to www.humanedurham.com  and make a donation directly to them.  They lost everything and once they have a new location, they will be needing computers, furniture, crates... well, everything!  They absolutely must be helped for they have loved, sheltered and re-homed needy animals for years and they need our help to continue.  It is our turn to step up to the plate... Please find it in your heart to help us help them right now.  Thank you so much.

11.14.08
To all dog owners:

Please be advised that a dog that routinely walked at Harmony Valley recently died of leptospirois.  The dog had been vaccinated against the common strains of leptospirosis, however they were ineffective against this particular version.  There is no indication that the dog acquired the disease at the park, but we would like to make all owners aware of the situation.

11.02.08

Lands south of the alignment will be designated to permit medium- and high-density residential uses. A portion of the lands will also accommodate commercial and office uses. The Eastdale Part II Plan also will be amended to reflect the changes. The meeting is scheduled November 10.

Updating Our Mailing List

Important Notice to All Park Users ODAWG President, Clare Ford, still has many email addresses in her contact list that are not going through. If you have provided your email address to the executive but are not receiving any mail, please notify Clare and she will ensure your correct email address is in her contact list.
We would like to invite you to become an ODAWG member. Membership and the voluntary fees of $10 per dog or $15 for two or more dogs show your support for the Harmony Creek Off Leash Park, pay for a website so we can keep you up to date on the happenings in the park, help develop the ambassador program and offset the cost of future improvements to the park decided upon by the users. We hope to eventually hold dog-focused educational events as well.
